The boy was quick – quicker than any normal human being. He was light on his feet and his reflexes were as fast as hers. He was young, maybe a few years younger than she was. Straight, dark hair fell across his dark eyes and his lean physic gave evidence that he was a trained fighter.

Buffy dodged another punch and swung one of her own. This time, he wasn’t fast enough to duck and the punch connected across his jaw. He spun round and dropped to the ground. Before Buffy could grab him, the stranger flipped to his feet and aimed a kick squarely at Buffy’s chest. The slayer flew back upon impact and crashed into the grimy wall of the alley.

Buffy slid to the ground, panting hard. He’s not going to give up! The fight has been going on for nearly half an hour now and he didn’t seem to be tired or getting tired. The young man grinned widely as he approached her.

Buffy frowned. There was something vaguely familiar about his swagger. And it didn’t stop there. His fighting style has a certain familiarity to it as well. Maybe that’s why Buffy was able to survive this long. She could almost predict every move he was about to make. Like now. Buffy was sure the stranger would kick her across the jaw, pick her up and throw her across the alley like a rag doll.

Buffy rolled out of the way before the teenager could execute his move. A glimmer of surprise sprang in his dark eyes and Buffy couldn’t help but smile.

Oh and there was yet another thing that was familiar – his eyes.

A shudder ran through Buffy as she locked eyes with him. She remembered eyes like those. They belonged to someone she thought she was never see again. But here were those eyes, glaring at her.

Angel…

He came at her once again, giving her only seconds to react. They traded blows, exchanged kicks, leapt at each other and drew blood. No matter how hard she fought, the boy met her kicks and punches to perfection. Exhaustion was starting to set in on Buffy and the slayer wondered if the same was happening to her opponent. It certainly didn’t look that way.

Buffy ducked and rolled just as the teenager’s leg lashed out at her. Staying low on the ground, Buffy swept a leg at him. Her leg connected with his and he hit the ground hard.

Buffy quickly pulled out her stake, scrambled towards the teenager and straddled him. She placed the stake against his chest, the sharp wood directly above his heart.

“Alright, now that I’ve got your attention…”

The boy struggled and Buffy pressed the stake harder against him. It broke his flesh, causing blood to pool around the wood. He winced, a scowl darkening his expression.

“Stop that or I’ll ruin this really nice shirt of yours.”

The teenager stilled but he didn’t stop glaring at her. His dark, Angel-like eyes causing her to momentarily lose her concentration.

“Ok. That’s good. We are cooperating. Nice to finally fight someone who cooperates. You can’t believe the number of people who don’t understand the meaning of 'cooperate'.”

Buffy knew the boy was fast so she should have expected what he was about to do. But before she could go through with her threat and drill the stake into his chest, the teenager head-butted Buffy. Hard. Pain exploded behind her eyes, causing her to reel back. The boy took the chance and threw her off him.

“Less talk, Summers,” she chided herself. “Next time, less talk.” Buffy blinked away the pain and quickly got to her feet. She turned to face her opponent but he was nowhere in sight. The alley was silent and void of any life except her own.

“Oook.”

The lead pipe struck her between her shoulder blades. As she fell to the ground, she caught sight of the pipe being swung at her again. She rolled out of the way just as the pipe hit the spot where she was less than a second ago. Groaning, Buffy tried to climb to her feet.

The teenager, however, had other ideas.

He swung the pipe again and this time, it connected across Buffy’s jaw. Pain exploded across the slayer’s face and Buffy was sure her jaw had just come loose and was rolling on the ground somewhere.

Using whatever strength Buffy had, she pushed herself to her feet and started stumbling towards the mouth of the alley. Right now, she had two choices – stick around and get whacked again or run.

Might not be the bravest thing she had ever done but she so do not want to be whacked again. Run it is then.

Buffy heard footsteps pounding behind her and she poured on more speed. A street loomed ahead and Buffy knew that if she reached it, there’s a good chance of losing her opponent.

Safety was only meters away when she felt something hit the back of her legs. She lost her balance. She pitched forward. The ground met her.

He grabbed a fistful of her blond hair and yanked her to her feet. Buffy cried out in pain. He pulled her close to him and leered.

“He deserves this.”

Buffy’s mind reeled. Before her brain could figure out who this ‘he’ was, the teenager showed off his impressive strength by heaving her across the alley. She hit the grimy wall for the second time that night.

There was no time to catch her breath or let her body recover from the throw. He was coming at her again. A dull gleam caught her eye and Buffy realised that the lead pipe was back in his possession. A slight smirk played at the corner of his lips as he advanced towards her. Buffy's mind tingled. This whole scene felt awfully familiar – like she been through this before.

“I’m sorry,” Buffy uttered.

The teenager froze. He cocked his head at her. “What?”

“For what he did. I’m sorry.”

He didn’t reply but Buffy knew she hit a nerve. She continued, “I know he hurt you but I’m sure he didn’t mean it. He –”

“Shut up!” he roared. “You don’t get to make excuses for him!”

Maybe it was his voice or maybe it was his anger. Or maybe it was the fact that this moment felt so damn familiar – but whatever it was, everything finally clicked into place for Buffy.

That confident swagger, that smirk, his dark eyes…Buffy knew at once who this teenager was. Her eyes widened in realisation. Oh god no.

“You’re his…” Buffy couldn’t finish her sentence. Saying the words out loud would just make it all too real. And she can’t do real right now, especially not with this.

“He took everything away from me! My life, the girl I love.” He smiled but there was no warmth in it. “Now it’s my turn.”

Conner swung the pipe.

Then.

Darkness.
