So I've been thinking about maybe starting to watch this show but I really don't have any clue about what the story in it is about. I know it's doctors and whatnot but what goes on in that hospital? So many friends of mine watch but never tell me anything non-spoilery, so if any good samaritan would feel up to it I'd love to get the lowdown as to WHY I should be watching

It's kinda hard to explain, but it's not just a hospital show. Meredith Grey (the main character) has moved into her mom's old house and she looks for some roomates and it is just about peoples lives at the hospital, romantic and not. It is such a great show, I suggest at least giving it a try since it is hard to explain without it sounding all weird and cheesy.

Why you should be watching? Why aren't you watching?! LOL.

This show has everything - drama, comedy, relationships, friendships, etc. What I like about this show the most is how it's able to juggle all of this without losing sight of the plot. It's a lot like Buffy really, just without the demons and is set in the hospital.

Plus you have McDreamy...

Why did you say that? We're trying to get her to watch! lol! Just kiddin

Anyway I snagged this off of TV.com it is a pretty good summary:

Quote:
Meet Meredith Grey. She's a woman trying to lead a real life while doing a job that makes having a real life impossible.

Meredith is on the job at Seattle Grace as a first year intern with at least 20 others. Each year the interns are split into groups are assigned to residents which often results in them getting to have a support system or just a possible chance to get to know the competition.

Meredith has been assigned to senior resident Miranda Bailey, infamously known as "The Nazi" for her work ethic and her attitude. Bailey gets things done and she doesn't take any bull.

In Meredith's group are 4 other first-year interns: Cristina Yang, Isobel "Izzie" Stevens, George O'Malley and Alex Karev. Yesterday they were students but today they are doctors at Seattle Grace Hospital. They are participating in the toughest surgical residency program west of Harvard. But their new jobs aren't the only things they have to keep them busy. There are always their personal lives. That is, If they get a chance to have them...

Meredith is a one of the surgeon in the top of her class. She's somewhat considered royalty because her mother, Ellis Grey, was a noted pioneering surgeon known for making breakthroughs in the specialty as a talented surgeon and as a woman who broke barriers. Only thing is Ellis now lives in Roseridge where she suffers from a tragic and devastating illness but she doesn't want anyone to know. Meredith keeps her mother's secret because she asks her to.

Cristina is highly competitive and driven but usually lacks the people skills required to do her job effectively. Bedside manner is not her strong suit. Izzie grew up on the other side of the tracks and worked her way up by paying off her tutition by modeling. She's beautiful but sometimes she's too personal with her patients and may run into trouble when it comes to letting go. George is warm and kind and he has the hugest crush on Meredith. Besides having a habit of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time he can't seem to move out of the "just friends" zone. Kavev is a jerk but he's honest about his cutthroat attitude. He's arrogant and somtimes he's idiotic.

The five interns struggle to find people that they can connect to and often find that they only people they have time to meet, date, or hang out with all work at the hospital.

So I guess it's no wonder that the person Meredith meets in the Emerald City Bar across the street turns out to be her bosses' boss. Derek Shepherd is an attending at Seattle Grace and he just moved here from New York City. Her likes ferry boats and, like almost everyone in the hospital, has secrets to share. Derek is a flirtatious neurosurgeon who Meredith insists she can't date because of hospital politics. Preston Burke is arrogant but with a good amount of reason. He's one of the best cardio-thorasic surgeons in the country with one of the lowest patient mortality rates. The only problem with his arrogance is that it may make him less suited for the job of chief of surgery in comparision to Derek.

The job of chief of surgery currently belongs to Dr. Richard Webber, Seattle Grace's paternal, but no-nonsense leader.

Grey's Anatomy is a drama about the intensity of medical training mixed with the funny, sexy, and sometimes painful lives of people who are about to discover that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white. Real life only comes in shades of grey.

Hope this helps

I never really thought McDreamy was THAT great, to be honest, lol. Although, I am a big MerDer shipper.

Dana, go and watch the show! The summaries and descriptions don't really do justice to the show. I'm sure you'll love it!
Dana

McDreamy? hmm.. I don't see one person being the reason to watch a show because he's sooo dreamy (unless he's David Boreanaz  )

But it does sound interesting, so I think I'm gonna start hunting the show and when all other shows goes on summer vacation I'm set with a few GA seasons to keep me occupied during the withdrawls of the other shows

Thanx for the persuation guys!

I'm a huge Derek and MerDer fan. I love him even more after the whole arc with the ferryboat accident.

Yay! In no time, you'll be a fan as well.

MerDer? sounds like Murder spelled the wrong way

Sorry.. had to say it!

I probably will. Just like One Tree Hill. I remember asking Nikki what OTH stood for.. now I love the show. Bad self! *head desk*

How many seasons has there been? Alot of drama?

any medical thing going on?

Seems the medical shows are getting a big comeback as of late. ER is big again, House and GA, and not to forget Nip/Tuck - not sure exactly what that show is about more than the plastic surgery thing, but still. Medical.

U.S is currently showing season 3. Season 1 had only 9 episodes while season 2 had about 28 eps. I heard season 3 will have up to 25 episodes. And yes there has been a lot of drama, esp right now with season 3. So many things going on - all edge of your seat stuff. I can't wait for the new ep next week!

There are medical stories going on. Every week the interns and doctors are faced with a new medical challenge. Which is good, as it just shows that the series balances personal stuff and work stuff quite well.

Btw, which season of OTH are you at now?
Dana

Yickes, talk about long season - 28 eps. That's more than O.C even did and I thought they went along way with their 26 eps. Boy was I wrong!

I like that they seem to be doing life and work as one so to speak, that they handle medical challenges and life challenges. And reading on the summarie, seems to be a very incestuas group sorry.. again with the stupid comments. Anyway, I look forward to seeing a new medical show because I only watch ER otherwise and that show has gone way down hill the last 4 or 5 years.. grasping at straws while sliding.

About OTH - let me move that discussion to the 'other shows' section and lets invite others
Dana

Damn you people for getting me to watch this show. Now I'm all kinds of addicted and I can't wait for my next fix! I'm a horrible junkie

At first it felt like a new version of ER but after watching the first season, it really isn't. It's better. It's much more interesting, and very different. They play out on different levels. ER is.. well in the ER, and GA is in the surgical section which is also a very good thing because it helps to not mistake the two shows for the same thing (CSI anyone *caugh*). The characters are so funny, I mean come on, doing a autopsy without the ok and then getting caught.. baaad interns The characters does alot of interesting things, it feels more real watching these as interns because they really do mess up and isn't perfect and I like that.

And ok.. I give up - there's Dr McDreamy. He cracked me up so much in the first season, especially before Meredith desided to go for it.

And George. He makes me think of Romain (Creamy Coolness), but I guess that's more because I saw him using an icon of him for months and now I just kinda see them as one

Aaaanyway, I'm hooked. You guys were right, this show is SO worth the time
shred

Yay! Mission is accomplished!

If you think season 1 is good, wait till you watch season 2. That season would really make you fall in love with the characters and all kinds of level.

Who is your favourite character btw? No, wait! Don't answer that here.

*points to the GA thread. *
Ameer

*rubs hand evilly* Another victim, mwaahahahahaaha.

Isn't GA great? I think it's all kinds of greatness. I bet you like Christina. Everyone loves her in the first season. Are you big on MerDer?

One of my all-time favourite scenes of GA is from Season 1 - the eppy where Izzie has a bigger party than the one she promised Meredith and things go haywire. I loved the MerDer scene where Meredith is drunk and McDreamy stands beside his car and looks at her. The song that is playing during that scene is also one of my favourites so it add all kinds of goodness.

*goes over to the GA thread*
