Spike's memory and the monksHi to everyone guys, there is a thought that lately don't want leave me alone and I thought to share it with you all.
Am I the only one to think that monks messed up with SPike's memory?
I started thinking that it was strange that until fifth season and Dawn arrive, SPike never realised what it felt for Buffy or never let slip something off.
For me make sense that the monks would assure that no one in Buffy's circle would be ready to sell Dawn identity. While the Scoobies were obviously not a danger for Dawn, SPike being soulless and a natural Buffy's enemy could be a great danger for Dawn. So why not endure his faithful making him fall in love with the Slayer? Is there anything more sure that Love to close someone mouth?
Please share your opinion with me. Thank you. :-)

To be honest, I don't think the monks even knew Spike, or even if they had heard of him, they didn't care who he was. What they were concerned about was the Key and how to hide it, which they did.
Spike falling in love with Buffy was probably something that Joss had plans for for a very long time. For instance, the first time Spike sees Buffy, he has a very predatory look and the whole setting is very suggestive. In Season 4, when Faith takes over Buffy's body and plays with Spike, you can tell by the expression on Spike's face that he would very much like to have Buffy too if he could get the chance. I think Joss or James himself even commented on this.
So I don't really think the monks had much of anything to do with Spike and his feelings for Buffy. It was just that he had these feelings for her all along without him realizing it, and they just developed and became all the more stronger over the years.

I think that the monks had to know about SPike since he was already around back then and they wouldn't risk to put their precious key in danger with a soulless demon like Spike around.
You could be right about SPike wanting Buffy without realizing it, since otherwise he wouldn't ever give his famous speech about Angel and Buffy never going to be friends.
About the time when Faith exchanged bodies with Buffy, it was her speech that got Spike so worked out for me. Spike is full of passion and violence and Faith/Buffy struck the right cords for me. Indeed I think that his obsession with Buffy started that night and his idea of what she was, born twisted because he thought that she was someone that in reality Buffy never was... the Faith/Spike speech in seventh season was the base for an eventual Faith spin.off where JW was thinking about coupling them together, using this misunderstanding like the base for their next relationship.
